Looks like SNK just can’t stay away from the hardware business. After releasing and failing on their Neo-Geo system and, subsequently, their Neo-Geo Pocket which was discontinued in 2001. Still, it looks like they hope a return to the hardware business is is just what the doctor ordered according to a leak by Japanese game blog Famicon Plaza.
According to Kotaku, who translated the story, the handheld has a 4.3 inch LCD screen, 2GBs of onboard memory and an SD card slot. It plans to ship with 20 pre-loaded games, all of which are retro Neo-Geo classics:
- World Heroes
- Ultimate 11
- Top Player’s Golf
- Sengoku
- Nam-1975
- Mutation Nation
- Last Resort
- King of Monsters
- Frenzy
- Cyber-Lip
- Fatal Fury Special
- The Art of Fighting
- Super Sidekicks
- League Bowling
- Metal Slug
- Magical Lord
- Baseball Stars Professional
- Samurai Shodown
- The King of Fighters ’94
- Fatal Fury
There’s no release date, release region, price or even an official announcement by SNK so this could all be one big practical joke. Still, if true, I can imagine plenty of happy retro gamers jumping on this is the price is right. The Neo-Geo, after all, did sport some really great games in its time.
